message from our Interim program director

Welcome to the Central Valley of California, and to San Joaquin General Hospital, the Valley’s only General Surgery residency program and Trauma center! It is with great pleasure that I invite you to visit our facility, and apply to our General Surgery Residency Program. As one of the few community- based true general surgery programs left in the country, with no fellowships, and a patient population that spans all demographics of society but usually has a dearth of access to care, our residents learn quickly how and when to operate, and the value of a safety- net hospital in a resource- stressed community. Our educational program encompasses didactic, self- learning, technical skills development (including training and certifying on a DaVinci robot), scientific exploration and clinical research, and clinical components that make our residents thoroughly competent and comfortable to compete on any national stage for fellowships and, indeed, for general practice if they so choose.

I expect great things from our residents, and hold them to a high standard of excellence. I welcome applications from highly- motivated self- learners who seek to serve a community while learning to become a world- class surgeon.

Dinesh Vyas, MD, MS

Dr. Vyas is a general surgeon with extensive experience in robotic, laparoscopic and endoscopic surgery. He is among rare physician scientists who investigate role of smart drugs using nanoparticles and irreversible proteasome inhibitor in inflammation. The clinical application of his work has been well-established in both triple negative breast cancer and sepsis.

In addition, he spearheads the fastest growing international education program in pre-hospital trauma care education. His contributes expansively to science: as editor and Chief Editor in major basic and clinical science journals and textbook.

Global Health

Dr. Vyas contributed to training approximately 2000 first responders during his 2014 in 8 sessions using the most innovative education model with the intention of spreading the knowledge of proper emergency care.

This is the fastest growing program of its kind anywhere for first responder training and with projected growth can reduce trauma mortality by 25% in next 6-8 years. This program includes faculty from various leading institutes in the US and aboard like India.

Dr. Vyas believed that by training policemen, paramedics, firefighters, security guards and ambulance drivers, in the proper care of the injured patient before they arrive at the hospital, thousands of lives could be saved and further lifelong disabilities could be avoided.

Dr. Vyas's interview with MSU Today is available here.
