FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM
Program Director/Department Chair
Dr. Asma Jafri completed residency training at SJGH and has remained dedicated to serving our community through Family Medicine. Her clinical interests include chronic disease management, quality & practice improvement, and geriatric care.
As Department Chair, Dr. Jafri is committed to supporting excellence in patient care, physician education, and the continued growth of the Family Medicine program. Board Certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.
Associate Program Director
Dr. Bhanu Wunnava completed medical school in India and Family Medicine residency at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center in Shreveport, Louisiana. Following residency, Dr. Wunnava joined the Family Medicine faculty at LSUHSC as an Assistant Professor, where he continued to teach and mentor residents while practicing full-spectrum Family Medicine.
Dr. Wunnava is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. His clinical interests include preventive care, infectious disease, pharmacology, diabetes, weight management, and arthritis.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Wunnava enjoys sports, writing, and exploring topics related to positive energy, wellness, and the philosophy of life.
Core Faculty/OB Fellowship Co-Director
Dr. Carlo’s Montes completed her undergraduate studies at UCLA and graduated from UC Davis School of Medicine. She developed her love for obstetrics during her rotation as a medical student at San Joaquin General Hospital. She completed her Family Medicine residency at Contra Costa Regional Medical Center and obtained further training in surgical obstetric and care of high-risk neonates through PCC Wellness/ West Suburban Parent Child Health Fellowship in Chicago, Illinois. She co-leads the OB Advanced Obstetrics fellowship, where she integrates her passion for whole person longitudinal health care, substance use disorders in pregnancy, and surgical obstetrics, all while promoting and practice full spectrum family medicine. Her interests outside of medicine include adventures with her dog, growing many plants, and advocating for immigrant rights.
Core Faculty
Dr. Hector Ley-Han is a board-certified family medicine physician and core faculty member with the San Joaquin General Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program. He earned his medical degree from Sidney Kimmel Medical College at Thomas Jefferson University and completed his Family Medicine residency training at San Joaquin General Hospital. With more than 30 years of experience in family medicine, Dr. Ley-Han is committed to providing comprehensive, patient-centered care and supporting the education and professional development of future family physicians.
Core Faculty
Dr. Felipe Chavez graduated from Universidad de Guadalajara in Mexico and completed an Internal Medicine residency in Mexico in 2020. Later, Dr. Chavez completed his Family Medicine residency at San Joaquin General Hospital in 2025 and is board certified by the American Board of Family Medicine.
Dr. Chavez professional interests include hospital medicine, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), chronic disease management, geriatrics, substance use disorders, and primary care. He is passionate about providing comprehensive, patient-centered care and supporting the education and development of future family physicians.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Chavez enjoys spending time with his family, camping, reading about history and philosophy, and following a variety of sports.
Core Faculty
Dr. Partha Gonavaram grew up in South India and attended medical school at an institution established in the 19th century. After moving to the United States, he earned a Master of Public Health from The Ohio University and completed his residency training at Emory University.
Dr. Gonavaran has more than 13 years of experience as core faculty and previously spent over four years at UC Irvine before joining San Joaquin General Hospital. He enjoys practicing and teaching in both inpatient and outpatient settings and values the opportunity to learn alongside residents.
His clinical interest includes obesity medicine and related conditions such as diabetes, heart failure with preserved ejection fraction, and obstructive sleep apnea. He is especially passionate about resident education, mentorship, and supporting the growth of future family physicians.
Outside of medicine, Dr. Gonavaram enjoys spending time with family, watching cricket, listening to classical music from both Indian and Western traditions, and traveling.
Clinical Faculty
Dr. Sabhrup Biring graduated from Acharya Shri Chander College of Medical Sciences and Research in India. She completed her Family Medicine residency at San Joaquin General Hospital and later completed a Family Medicine-Obstetrics fellowship at SJGH.
Her clinical interests include primary care, woman’s health, mental health, and outpatient procedures, with a particular interest in gynecologic procedures. Dr. Biring is passionate about resident education and enjoys teaching and mentoring future family physicians.
Outside of medicine, she enjoys cooking, dancing to Bollywood music, and spending time with her three children, including twins!
Community Preceptor
Dr. Ramiro Zuniga is the Vice President, Medical Director for Medi-Cal at Health Net. In this role, Dr. Zuniga has leadership and oversight responsibilities for the contractual, compliance, and regulatory requirements for the Medi-Cal line of business. He also provides strategic and operational direction for quality, utilization management, and administrative/clinical policies, procedures, and programs. Prior to joining Health Net, Dr. Zuniga was Chair of the Department of Family Medicine, Residency Program Director, and a member of the Board of Trustees at San Joaquin General Hospital in Stockton.
Ramiro is a Volunteer Clinical Professor at the Department of Family and Community Medicine of the University of California, Davis School of Medicine. He also serves on the Board of Directors of the Sacramento Latino Medical Association (SaLMA), co-leads the Northern California Chapter and serves in the Corporate Advisory Board of the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA), and is a member of the Board of Directors of the Archstone Foundation.
Dr. Zuniga earned his M.D. from the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, in Bogotá, Colombia and completed his Family Medicine Residency at St. Mary of Nazareth Hospital Center in Chicago. He received an MBA degree from UC Davis Graduate School of Management. He is board certified in Family Medicine and licensed in California, where he has practiced in underserved settings for over 25 years.
Geriatrics Medicine
Maureen Abaray, FNP: Maureen was a pivotal team member of the Geriatrics Clinic at SJGH previously and has also been employed by the Health Plan of San Joaquin engaging in home visits for patients with chronic disease. Nurse Abaray is a certified Diabetes Educator. Her expertise in community resources stems from her residence in Stockton and Lodi for over 30 years. Maureen has language fluency in Spanish in integral to improving the quality of care our residency provides.
Program Coordinator
Jennifer brings more than six years of experience in hospital operations and Graduate Medical Education, where she has supported residency programs, physicians, and the day-to-day operations that help GME programs thrive. Her experience has strengthened her passion for medical education and for creating a welcome, organized, and encouraging environment where residents feel supported throughout their training.
The opportunity to join SJGH was especially meaningful to Jennifer because her commitment to serving underserved populations and giving back to the community. She is passionate about supporting resident growth, strengthening the residency experience, and helping create an environment where future physicians feel valued, encouraged, and prepared to serve the communities that need them the most.
Outside of work, Jennifer enjoys cooking, painting, hosting family gatherings, traveling, and spending time with her husband and their Border Collie, Brutus!
Department Secretary
Magdalena "Maggie" has been at San Joaquin General Hospital since 2014. She started in the transitions of care unit and then transferred to the Family Medicine department in 2022. She really enjoys working with the residents and watching them girl from interns to fully fledged positions. It's a very rewarding process to experience! In her spare time, she enjoys going to the beach, spending time with her family, and especially her six grandchildren.
