FAMILY MEDICINE RESIDENCY PROGRAM
We are the heartbeat of San Joaquin, and for over 50 years, our residency has been training family medicine physicians who show up for this community, no exceptions.
Founded in 1972, our program is embedded within San Joaquin General Hospital and affiliated with UC Davis School of Medicine. That partnership pairs our residents' hands-on community training with access to some of the field's most advanced medical knowledge.
Our residents care for a diverse, high-acuity, medically complex patient population, the kind of experience that builds physicians who are ready for anything. Training runs deep into the community itself: longitudinal clinics, street medicine outreach, and partnerships with local high schools for sports physicals and sideline coverage. We're increasingly active in outreach clinics, working alongside a multidisciplinary team to care for unhoused individuals across San Joaquin County.
Our curriculum doesn't shy away from the essentials that too many programs treat as optional: buprenorphine management for substance use disorder, gender health and hormone titration, and treatment of HIV and hepatitis C. Residents graduate ready to practice full-spectrum family medicine in any environment, no exceptions.
Our faculty are teachers first, and the culture here is one you must feel on interview day to really understand. Residents are treated as colleagues, given real autonomy, backed by real support, and never left to sink or swim alone. We're committed to your growth as a physician and as a person, in the hospital and outside of it.

As this year’s Chief Residents, we are honored to introduce you to a program with a long and proud history. Since 1972, SJGH has trained family physicians who go on to serve communities across California. Many of our graduates practice full‑spectrum primary care, while others have pursued fellowships in Sports Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Obstetrics and Addiction Medicine. Our hospital is deeply committed to caring for the diverse and underserved residents of San Joaquin County. As one of the region's teaching institutions, we train alongside residents in Internal Medicine and Surgery, creating a collaborative environment where interdisciplinary teamwork is part of daily life.
The heart of our training is our Family Medicine clinic, where residents develop strong procedural and clinical skills while caring for continuity patients and their families. The breadth of pathology encountered at SJGH is second to none, and our attendings provide the autonomy and support needed to grow into confident, capable physicians. By the time you graduate, you will be prepared to handle any situation that arises in your future practice.
Residency is challenging, transformative, and deeply meaningful. Our mission is to provide the training, resources, and support you need to become a well‑rounded, confident, and compassionate Family Medicine physician.
Resident life here is collegial and community-oriented. We work closely with our colleagues in Surgery and Internal Medicine during rotations, consults, and shared patient care. Many residents live together in nearby apartment complexes, while others rent homes or commute from surrounding areas. Our annual fall and spring retreats give everyone a chance to unwind, reconnect, and recharge.
If we had to choose again, this program would still be our first choice. The pathology, autonomy, camaraderie, and mentorship at SJGH shape us every day.
